Unidentified Rosy Slime on Secluded Tasmanian Beach Spurs Concerns of Possible Algal Bloom

Officials in Tasmania are attempting to pinpoint a pink slime that has surfaced on a secluded beach, with a number of researchers anxious it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.

Broad Appearance Along Beaches

The rosy-colored ooze materialized across a portion of Randalls Bay about 37 miles south of the capital. A similar sludge has also been recorded on sections of Little Roaring Beach and a separate bay.

Samples Taken for Testing

Specimens have been gathered and sent to the environmental agency for analysis. A representative commented that "phytoplankton proliferations are a normal phenomenon in reaction to changes in food sources, temperature, rain or sunlight".

"These blooms are occasionally called red or pink tides because the proliferations can turn the water reddish," the representative said. "Not all phytoplankton events are toxic, with numerous types functioning as a key source of food for animals in the aquatic ecosystem."

"The primary reason of crimson tides in local waters is the sea plant Noctiluca scintillans, which can create bioluminescent light displays at night."

Increasing Frequency Associated with Environmental Shifts

Phytoplankton proliferations are natural events but their frequency has risen in recent times, in part due to environmental shifts and contamination that join together to create food-loaded oceans ideal for the fast proliferation of dinoflagellates.

Dinoflagellates are a marine plant that usually serve as the ocean's detritus consumers. During a proliferation, there is a fast increase in their populations that interferes with the proper operation of aquatic systems.

A campaigner, who collected samples of the magenta ooze in the state, said it looked like the possible outbreak had "grown significantly" and proposed the salmon farming industry was the most likely culprit, referring to similar cases overseas.

"Therefore the state needs to send a clear message here, the authorities and the environmental agency need to act to this. We need to examine the examples we've gathered and we need to put word out the public here," she stated.

Henley said she had concerns for public safety after noticing a numbness along her limbs and skin while being exposed with affected seawater.

Reports of Dead Sea Creatures and Appeals for Official Response

An advocacy organization has documented dead octopus and deceased marine life being found on the beach, with a prominent conservationist labeling the circumstances as an "natural disaster" and calling on the state premier to inspect and "assume command the reaction that authorities must be making".
