Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.

At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
